All Quiet on the Stock Front

In the first quarter of 2017 the Dow Jones Industrial Average was the quietest it has been in more than 50 years. The average daily move in the first quarter was 0.3185%. That was the smallest average move since the fourth quarter of 1965. The S&P 500 stock index was also equally calm, with an average daily move of 0.3172%, the quietest quarter since the third quarter of 1967. So what does this mean? It means that there might be some “pent up energy” that could cause the markets to rise. Right now investors are waiting for some clarity regarding possible tax cuts and infrastructure spending. Once investors get this clarity they may be more inclined to purchase stocks, especially with the “pent up energy”. Even though many stock market averages are near record highs, we continue to recommend that investors with a long-term time horizon continue to stay invested in the market.
