First-Time Home Buyers Are Finally Buying Again

For the first time in a decade, there are more new home buyers than renters. There were 854,000 new-owner households formed in the first quarter of 2017, over double the 365,000 new-renter households. This means that people are now more apt to buy their own house rather than pay rent. What does this mean for the housing industry? Major home builders are beginning to focus on the first-time home buyers, who usually have lower entry price points, rather than on the luxury home market. According to the Wall Street Journal, in the first quarter of this year 31% of the speculative homes built by major builders were smaller than 2,250 square feet, which is considered in the starter home range. Helped by low mortgage rates, the return of first-time homebuyers is finally growing again.
